Artist Ron Emmerling
I have been an artist my entire life though I have been painting for just a few years. I graduated from Pratt Institute with a degree in Industrial Design. For more than three decades I owned a consultant design business in New Jersey. During that time we were fortunate to receive more than one hundred awards for design projects and Black and White photography.

Before losing the use of my dominant right hand and arm, I produced sculpture, pen and ink drawings, and paper collage. Four years ago feeling frustrated by my inability to walk, eat or work, I started to paint.

I have been told my vision of the world is geometric and heavily influenced by my graphic arts and industrial design background. Others see the close relationship between fine art and design. Though my paintings are generally not realistic, they are my version of recognizable objects. I rarely make sketches on the canvas and if I do they are very rudimentary. When I begin I have a visual impression of what I want to do, but when the paint hits the canvas that can change drastically. My images are frequently architectural or taken from nature with an emphasis on exaggerated form and bright color. Sometimes the images are a response to current news items, memories of growing up at the Jersey Shore or the work of artists that I admire such as Lichtenstein or Alex Katz.

Finding a new form of artistic expression gives me a reason to live every day. My mind is occupied with new ideas and how I can implement them. I need to paint! The response to my work gives me hope. I want others to see that life can be joyful, colorful and rewarding despite adversity.
